Cool Cotton

The world uses cotton more than any other natural fibre and it is mostly grown and used to make cloth. Nothing is wasted though as the other parts of the cotton plant are put to good use and are used in the production of foods, plastics and paper products. Cotton has many advantages because it is a natural product and the way it is designed and turned into clothing makes use of its ability to control moisture, provide comfort and insulate. It is also a very durable and hardwearing fabric which is hypoallergenic and weatherproof too. For White Cotton Fabric, visit https://www.higgsandhiggs.com/fabrics/plain-cotton-fabric.html.

Cotton is a clever fabric in that it protects against heat in the summer and against cold in the winter by providing thermal insulation, as the cotton fabric traps air between the fabric fibres. The cotton fibres in the clothing keep the fabric positioned away from the skin, thus allowing for more air to be trapped between the skin and fabric which helps to provide insulation and comfort.

Cotton fabric is very breathable and sends moisture away from the body. It is absorbent and removes liquid from the skin, acting  like a towel. This breathable quality is what allows you to remain comfortable as you exercise, keeping moisture from building up between your skin and clothing. Interestingly, cotton can hold up to one-fifth of its weight in water before even feeling damp. By adjusting the construction and finish of the cotton fabric, it can easily be manufactured into weather-resistant clothing. Cotton can be made into a dense, tight fabric with a weather-repellent finish and yet still retains its comfort and airiness.

The other great thing about cotton fabric is that it rarely causes allergic reactions and wearing cotton is often recommended for those with skin allergies for that reason. Due to its hypoallergenic properties, it is ideal for use in medical products such as bandages and gauze. It is also the perfect choice for clothing for babies and children. Did you know that cotton doesn’t retain odour like some oil-based fabrics? It releases smelly substances more easily than other fabrics once it’s in the wash.

This type of clothing is soft on the skin and is flexible and stretchy, so it’s super comfy to wear. This is why it is the primary choice of material for items like underwear, undershirts and nightwear. We are more likely to get a better night’s sleep on cotton sheets than synthetic fibres due to cotton’s ability to let our skin breathe.

Cotton also has a high tensile strength which makes it durable, long lasting and much less likely to rip when placed under pressure. It can withstand many hot water washings as it’s actually 30% stronger when wet. Cotton is so versatile that it can be woven into other fabrics to create things like corduroy, chambray, lace and velour. You’ll also never have to worry about cotton being clingy in an awkward, static kind of clingy. Cotton cannot hold an electric charge so you can be confident you’ve got cling-free clothes when wearing cotton.
