How to service your washing machine

Your washing machine works most efficiently when it is well maintained. It is not necessary to pay for a specialist service, unless the machine is malfunctioning, as most routine maintenance can easily be carried out at home on a Do It Yourself basis.1. Run a regular maintenance wash

This involves running the machine unloaded, ideally once a month or more often if you are regularly washing heavily soiled clothing, on the highest-temperature wash that it offers. This will break down any grease and detergent residue that may be lingering in the machine

2. Check and clean hoses and filters

If you don’t always check the pockets on clothes that you put into your machine, there is a chance that items will end up in the filter or hose that could cause the machine to malfunction. Lint and threads can also come loose during the wash and clog the filters after a period of time. To guard against issues arising, every couple of months you should place a container underneath the filter to catch any water that escapes, carefully unscrew the filter and clean it before replacing it.

3. Clean the detergent drawer

Following the manufacturer’s instructions, once a month, you should carefully remove the detergent drawer and wash it in hot, soapy water. Take this opportunity to clean the inside of the drawer to remove any detergent residue that has built up.

4. Clean the drum and seal

After every wash, wipe around the inside of the drum and the door seal with a damp, microfibre cloth to remove any residue that has been left following the cycle, in particular, ensure no water is sitting at the bottom of the seal. For best effect, leave the door open for a little while afterwards to allow fresh air to circulate.

If your washing machine is old, inefficient or regularly malfunctions, it may be time to invest in a new one.
