What type of gloves best protect against coronavirus?

type of gloves

Individual protection against coronavirus is based on confining yourself at home, maintaining social distance when leaving, not touching your face or frequently washing your hands. If you wear gloves, we will tell you which ones to choose to avoid contagions.

The most effective way to avoid becoming infected with the SARS-COV-2 virus is to wash your hands frequently, since in addition to direct contagion by droplets or fluid sprays from infected people, it can also happen through contact of the hands with materials or surfaces that harbor the virus and then pass to the nose, mouth and eyes after touching your face. For this reason, many people take extreme care using disposable gloves, in addition to the mask, when they leave the house to work, take the dog for a walk or make purchases.

Not all gloves are the same: there are different materials such as polyethylene, vinyl or latex. If you want to know which are the most appropriate to protect yourself according to the activity you carry out or the objects you manipulate with them, read on.

4 different types of disposable gloves

Polyethylene gloves: They are suitable for choosing pieces of fruit, bread or vegetables in the supermarket. Their chemical resistance is poor and they are the least useful and effective to protect you against the coronavirus.

Vinyl gloves:  You will recognize them for their transparent color, since they are made from latex-free synthetic PVC resins. They are also the cheapest.  You can use them for short tasks with little risk, such as cooking or cleaning your house, since they protect against irritating or polluting substances. But they are not a good option to prevent contagion, nor are they used in the health field.

Latex gloves:  For those without allergies, disposable gloves made with this natural rubber material are an optimal option. It works as a second skin adapted to the shape of the hand. They are elastic, sensitive and durable and protect from infectious fluids. Those with higher quality are not accessible to citizens since they are only for surgical use.

Nitrile gloves: They are the most widely used in healthcare today – usually purple or blue. Its base material is synthetic rubber, which does not cause allergies. Sensitive, comfortable and highly adaptable they are ideal for their chemical resistance. They are the best option to avoid getting SARS-VOC-2.

It should be noted that no measure or type of glove should replace hand washing. You should never wear wool or leather gloves – in whose materials the virus can remain for days or hours. You must have clean hands when putting on disposable gloves and wash them again when taking them off, without these generating a feeling of lack of security that throws proper hygiene overboard. Don’t touch your face with them.

When buying gloves you should make sure that, they contain the identification called ISO 374-5. According to the Association of Personal Protective Equipment Companies (ASEPAL), it indicates that they provide adequate protection against mechanisms such as the SARS-CoV-2 virus. They should not squeeze you or be too baggy, but be your size. It is better to wear short nails and avoid wearing bracelets or rings that can pierce them.
