Getting your Garden Ready for the Spring and Summer

Now that Spring has returned (albeit with some snow and stormy weather mixed in!) it is time to get back outdoors and start enjoying the natural world once again. Being in the natural world is great for mental wellbeing too, and if you are struggling with the winter blues, this is something that might help you.

The garden is somewhere that can help you to relax, and gardening is something that you can really get into at this time of the year, as the earth starts to return to life. There is a lot that can be done in the garden in spring to make it a good place to spend time over the warmer months, and you may have noticed that the daffodils are already up, and the landscape is brighter as these sunny coloured flowers herald the start of the warmer days.

As we pass the spring equinox, the days also become noticeably longer and the earth receives more warmth and sunlight, allowing warmer weather to take hold once again – this is now the main time of growth for plants, so get started with your planting!

The risk of frost at night is not over yet, despite the warming land, so it is a good idea to start your seeds off in the greenhouse where they can be protected from the cold snaps that can happen throughout late spring. However, if you are wanting to plant bare root plants, now is a good time to do this.

You should also now prepare the tools and equipment that you will need to use in your garden. Make sure that you have all the things that you need, and give them a good clean if necessary. Check larger items too – for example, if you have a lawnmower that is coming out of its winter hibernation, now is a good time to give it a check and if it needs to be repaired, order parts online from somewhere like this Mountfield spares store www.diyspareparts.com/parts/mountfield

Have a general tidy up of the garden, get pots ready to be used and sweep up any debris that has been strewn around the garden by the winter winds.
