How to wash your wool clothing

Whether it’s your favourite sweater, a classic pair of wool trousers, or a stylish winter coat, taking care of your woollen wardrobe pieces is essential to ensure they stand the test of time. Read on to find out more so you never make a wool-washing mistake again.
Check the label

Before diving into the washing process, take a close look at the care label of your wool garment. Most wool items come with specific washing instructions that should be followed closely. The label will provide valuable information on water temperature, washing methods, and whether it’s safe for machine washing or better suited for handwashing.

Handwashing for delicate care

For delicate woollens, especially those labelled “hand wash only,” like a womens Aran sweater, handwashing is the way to go. This will help your gorgeous womens Aran sweater to really last.

All you need to do is fill a sink with lukewarm water, add some gentle detergent, and gently push the woollen clothes down into the water. Agitate the water a little and let everything soak for approximately 15 minutes. Then rinse with cold water and roll the garment in a clean towel to extract any excess water.

Machine washing for sturdier wool

Some wool items can handle machine washing. That makes the job much quicker, but only if the label permits.

Drying with care

Never wring out your wool clothing, as it can distort the wool fibres. Instead, lay the garment flat on a towel and gently encourage it back into its original shape. Allow it to air dry away from heat and sunlight which can cause shrinking and fading.

Storage and maintenance

To keep your wool clothing in top shape, you need to store it in a cool, dry place and ideally use cedar or lavender sachets to deter moths. Make sure you avoid hanging heavy items, as this can stretch the fibres.

With these simple steps, you can enjoy your beloved wool clothing pieces for years to come. Remember, proper care will preserve the softness, warmth, and style that make wool an enduring favourite in your wardrobe.
